Our team of preparedness professionals has been monitoring current disasters for the last five years and here is a list of common disasters that occur during the month of June:
- Flood disasters
- Wildfire disasters.
- Extreme Weather disasters.
- Asset Protection disasters.
So, what are we talking about when we mention these general disaster categories? Let us get more specific about these categories:
Flood disasters include situations such as:
- 23 inches of rain drenches parts of Texas.
- Roads turn into rivers in Florida.
- Dam near failure as waters rise.
- Major floods displace 250,000 people.
Wildfire disasters include situations such as:
- Thousands evacuated as fires burn in Canada and the U.S.
- Northeast wildfires continue to rage.
- A year after L.A. wildfires, rebuilding is going slowly.
- “We’re sitting in the middle of a bonfire!”
Extreme Weather disasters include situations such as:
- Extreme heat set to usher in summer.
- Another day of dangerous heat for the eastern half of the U.S.
- Forecasters say, “Get ready for several years of killer heat”.
- Is June the new July? Intense heat hits earlier every year.
Asset Protection disasters include situations such as:
- That text message says you owe on a traffic ticket. It is a scam!
- Even kids can be victims of online extortion.
- Cops say “When you leave your car, take your keys … please!
- Scammers find a gold mine in QR codes.
How do you protect you and your family from these common June disasters? The flood and wildfire disaster types require that you should have an evacuation plan. It is the most difficult plan to implement because it requires some planning ahead of time. You need to ask yourself and your family such questions as:
- Where will you go for safety? Down the block? Out of town? Out of state?
- What important items will you take with you if you are unable to return home?
- Could you afford to leave your ownership and identity proof documents behind?
- What if you had no choice but to evacuate (by order of government officials)?
You can prepare for the other two disaster types (Extreme Weather and Asset Protection) in the comfort of your home. Protecting your assets requires a family safety meeting. Sit down with your kids and talk about steps they should take, like ‘Don’t ever borrow your phone to a stranger’. Want to protect family members from extreme heat disasters? Staying safe in the comfort of your air-conditioned home is one way, but what should family members do when they are outside or stuck in a hot car?
We encourage you to check out the valuable information on our website to learn how to create these two plans. The high risks to your family in June include flood and wildfire events.
