So Many Disasters!  What Could Go Wrong?

If you think a disaster may never impact you and your family, think again.  There are over 50 disaster types and they are happening more frequently then ever - almost every day!  There are two categories of disasters: natural disasters and man-made disasters.  Yet, disasters can be further divided into other sub-categories: Natural disasters (includes geological, meteorological, biological hazards and technology caused hazards).  Additionally, man-made or human-caused disasters can be grouped into two sub-categories: accidental and intentional disasters.

Here's a full list of potential hazards or disasters that a family could experience during a lifetime!

  • Landslide, mudslide, subsidence (sinkholes)

  • Utility interruption or failure (electrical power, water, gas or steam leak)
  • Telecommunications failure (telephone, satellite, internet or cell tower disruptions)
  • Environmental related hazards (pollution control, sewerage, other infrastructure failure)
  • Hazardous material spill or release
  • Nuclear power plant incident
  • Explosion or fire or smoke damage
  • Broken water pipes, loss of water supply, drain blockage
  • Building or structure collapse
  • Entrapment and/or rescue (machinery, confined space, water rescue)
  • Transportation incidents (motor vehicle, railroad, watercraft, aircraft, pipeline)

  • Lost person, child abduction, kidnap, extortion, hostage incident, workplace violence
  • Demonstration, civil disturbance, labor strike, police action
